on Monday, it was absolutely pouring in Manhattan. it was the kind of rain that no one is safe from, no matter what type of umbrella you use or how fast you run. so when we decided we were hungry and in need of a warm, dry place to eat, my friend suggested that we go to AQ Kafé, a European-inspired restaurant with a menu that is heavily influenced by typical modern Swedish cuisine. since we’d been travel buddies in Stockholm just a few short months ago, it seemed like a perfect place to have a midday meal.

my friend had the Swedish meatballs, which came with mashed potatoes (Scandinavians have perfected this side dish), pickled cucumbers just like the ones that I ate every day in Denmark, lingonberries (which are not only served at IKEA), and some bread. the dish was so very Scandi and she ate every little bit even though she claimed that she wasn’t super hungry.

I had the grilled cheese and tomato soup. it was absolutely perfect given that my tummy was rumbling after spending all day wandering around the MoMA and my legs were cold from the rain. the sandwich was made with hand-cut brioche and aged millport dairy cheddar. it was an interesting twist on the classic pairing and definitely cured my comfort food craving.

seeing a menu packed with fingerling potatoes and herring actually made me a bit nostalgic for Nordic cuisine. who knew I could find it right in the middle of Manhattan?

on Sunday morning, my friend and I popped into the Whole Foods at Lincoln Center and then made our way to the High Line to have a picnic and people watch. My friend said it best when she declared, ‘this is the only place in New York where I don’t get made because people are walking slowly.’

I apologize for being a little MIA this week, but I am now a working girl, getting up early, taking lunch breaks, and crawling into bed before midnight. the reality of grownup, employed life is kind of a bummer, but I am in love with my job, the company, and the people that I work with so it’s not all bad. this week was just rough since I was working 8:30-5 and then 6-10:30 at my old part-time position. it’s all over now, and I’m getting ready to hop on to a Megabus bound for Manhattan. I’m spending the weekend with my good friend and we’ll be wandering around museums (the Cindy Sherman exhibit at MoMA is a must-do for me), eating brunch, and dancing until we can’t stand up anymore at EDC on Sunday. it’s going to be one eventful weekend, and I’d really like to spend the next 2 days in my bed and/or a lounge chair, but I know that this trip will be amazing.

and don’t mind too much when we laugh at their lame jokes.

adventures in film: with a cat

our cat is a very social creature, and nothing makes her happier than when we humans go outside and wander around with her. we have a pretty big yard, so she can sit and watch the birds at the feeder, play with frogs in the pond, or climb a tree and be the most satisfied kitty on the block. every time I tried to take a picture she would see me and run over to say hello. she’s obviously not very camera shy.

she really doesn’t like her feet to touch water, though. it took her like 5 minutes to cross that puddle, shaking her little paws with each step. this is also why I have muddy little footprints all over the roof of my car.

adventures in film, part II: tulips

I picked these tulips up on my birthday last week and they were doing spectacularly, standing straight in a lovely glass vase, with the petals growing darker and more intense every day. then one night I came home from work to find the petals of all but one of the tulips strewn on the floor. my brother had tried to realign the vase with the coaster it was resting on (with his foot) and ended up knocking the vase over. so sad. the next morning, I was watching Tiny Furniture (stream it on Netflix. it resounded a little too closely with me, a recent college graduate living at home) when the petals from the last tulip burst into the air and audibly fell onto the coffee table. so dramatic.
