snow day

February 8, 2010

Pittsburgh is still an absolute mess.  Maybe it’s because I’m from Vermont and am used to everyone having a snow plow and 4 wheel drive that I have trouble believing that just over 2 feet of snow can bring an area to a grinding halt.  Regardless, I am thoroughly enjoying the perks that this storm has provided.

Yesterday I made the trek down to the Natural History Museum for work, but since only 5 people showed up within the first hour, we shut down and I suddenly had a free day to catch up on work.  I went to Starbucks and got a grande soy cappuccino to fuel my study session and managed to spend a solid 5 hours in the library before I had a group meeting.  I made it back home (it took me twice as long as it should have – the sidewalks are still a mess!) and made a meal with what I could find.  Carrot fries, Smart Dogs, and sautéed asparagus and broccoli are what I may be having for a few days until I can get to a grocery store.

After spending another 2 hours prepping for my stats exam, I received the best email that has ever found it’s way into my inbox:

This evening, public safety officials of the City of Pittsburgh strongly
encouraged the university to cancel classes tomorrow and call off all
non-essential personnel, in light of what they have assessed to be a
continuing dangerous situation for drivers and pedestrians as a result
of this weekend’s storm.

Classes on Monday are cancelled.

As soon as I read that, I put down my pen and decided to not do another second of work.  While a lot of people were taking this extended weekend to have yet another night of partying, I opted to watch some Netflix on my computer and made a Valentine’s Day card for my grandparents.  My night spent watching Confessions of a Shopaholic (cute but not especially good – exactly what I needed) and hacking away at old issues of Teen Vogue was pretty much the best gift the snow gods could have given me.

This morning I forced myself to sleep in and didn’t get out of bed until 10:45.  I made my way into the kitchen and made an amazing bowl of oats.  First I topped 1/2 cup quick oats with Splenda, cinnamon, strawberry preserves, Tofutti cream cheese, and Better ‘n Peanut Butter.  Then I mixed it all together and dumped Kashi Go Lean all over it.  I used to love PB,J,&C sandwiches when I was little, and this hit that same exact spot.

Now I’m trying to figure out what to do with my day.  I have quite a bit of work that needs to be done, but there’s a big part of me that wants to put on Sex and the City reruns and reorganize my closet.  Decisions, decisions…

What would you do with a surprise day off?

Yay snow days! That huge bowl of oats looks AWESOME. I’ve never tried cream cheese on a PB&J, though…I’d absolutely choose SATC + closet organizing over homework, but I’m probably a bad influence :)

With a surprise day off I would probably.. work on my course. Haha.. lame. But after that I would then do tons of reading, blog reading and maybe watch one or two of my favorite movies. All while spending that time with my sister. We have a blast together. =)

Your Valentine project makes me want to go chop up a magazine now.. nothing creative would come out of it but I like to attempt.

I would bake cookies from scratch. Although a thorough inventory/cleaning of my closet with Carrie Bradshaw and the girls for company is a pretty good idea!

Did you end up watching SATC reruns?! I’ve been SO in the mood for that the past couple days, but just haven’t had the time to sit down and search for episodes on the internet (esp. since I still had to catch up on this week’s greys first!)–

That bowl of oats looks BOMB though. Tofutti ICE CREAM SANDWICHES = my childhood and therefore need to be brought back! Having them every so often over the past few years just isn’t enough! Haha :) I always go for the pb & j combo in my oats, but now need to try adding that cream cheese too! I’m intrigued, fo sho…..

Have a great Monday love! Talk soon!

I ended up catching up on some other shows, so I still need my SATC fix. They’re really easy to find on
