best I ever had

February 27, 2010

The lovely Gabriela over at Une Vie Saine has tagged me to answer a few questions that Drake probably knows something about.  (Why was that kid doing Degrassi when he could have been giving us such great music instead?)

Best Meal Ever: This summer I went to The Zenith Cafe, a primarily vegan and entirely vegetarian restaurant in South Side.  I couldn’t stop raving about it – the whimsical decor, value and quality of the food, and the fact that I could order anything I wanted without worrying about whether any animal products were used.  We ate approximately 5 courses, including the most decadent chocolate cake I’ve ever had, and left thoroughly stuffed and happy.

Best Sleep Ever: When I take Benadryl, it completely knocks me out.  One of the best sleeps I ever had was after I got stung by a bee (I used to be severely allergic) and was passed out for 14 hours.  I remember waking up feeling like no time had passed but being the most rested I have ever been.

Best Cup of Coffee: When I was a junior in high school, my art and latin classes went to Italy for 2 weeks.  Somewhere near Mt. Vesuvius we stopped at a small building that was known for the beautiful cameos that have been made there for hundreds of years.  While the gorgeous pendants and rings were far out of my price range, I did spend 2 € on the most amazing cappuccino I’ve ever had.  Sometimes I have dreams about that frothy cup of perfection.

Best Romantic Moment: I’ve never had a boyfriend and I usually find myself laughing at guys when they try to be suave, so I really can’t say that I’ve had a particularly romantic moment in all of my 20 years.

Best Childhood Memory: I don’t have any one memory that really sticks out for me, but I do remember being especially happy playing Kick-the-Can at our good family friends’ lake house in Maine.  It was one of those perfect summer nights – we made S’mores, caught fireflies, and played games until we were so exhausted we couldn’t resist crawling into a bed with cool, crisp sheets.

Best Moment of Life: I really hope that the best is still to come, but I remember feeling especially awesome one day in the spring of my senior year.  I was really into school in high school (much more than I am now), and really threw myself into doing well with a demanding schedule and working really hard on my college applications.  One afternoon, I came home to an especially large stack of mail – not one, not two, but four college acceptance letters all came on the same day.  At that moment, all of my hard work seemed to be paying off and I forgot about all of the weekends that I spent doing work at home instead of participating in all of the crazy shit that everyone else seemed to be getting into (and that I eventually began doing myself).  I had all of these options, I had an out, and these places wanted me to go there.  It made me feel valid, and I don’t think I’ve experienced such satisfaction since.

Best Moment of Revenge: I can’t think of any.  I usually avoid conflict (unless I’m arguing with my family members), and only hate a few people.  I do get a tremendous amount of satisfaction seeing someone get what they deserve, though.  Justice is a beautiful thing.

Best Thing You Have Ever Done for Someone: I don’t think that any act of kindness can be too small, and I can’t think of a good way to judge one being better than the other.

Best Life Changing Moment: While the traumatic fall down the stairs that I took 17 months ago was in no way a good thing, it was life changing in the best possible way.  Despite the hearing loss, brain damage, and learning disability that resulted (and a whole slew of awful emotional consequences), I ultimately reconsidered who I was, what I wanted to do in life, and what I wanted to be.  I’ve changed my whole outlook on life, and am no longer as rigid and controlled as I once was.  This event eventually led me to change my major, which is something that I am so happy that I did and couldn’t imagine my life stuck where I was.  I don’t think that everything happens for a reason, but I think you can take whatever happens and do the best you can with it.  If life gives you lemons, make a hell of a mixed drink out of them!

What are some of your bests?

Aw, I loved reading this! The Europeans definitely do coffee way better than us, don’t they? The Zenith Cafe sounds great, too.

In response to your comment, I don’t think I ever would have ever loved CMU, but I did make some good friends there. I hated it because of the reasons I decided to go there, and I felt I’d brought the misery upon myself by making a stupid decision. I did learn a few really important life lessons in the process, though, that I’m glad I learned as a teenager and not in my twenties.

I’ve had a handful of “bests” in my life, but I know the best is yet to come! Seriously! Holidays spent with family, partying the night away with my best friends after prom, going to Souplantation with my dad and eating till our stomachs HURT ….those were some good times.
