pittsburgh: the city of bridges

June 24, 2010

In 2006, Pittsburgh surpassed Venice, Italy as the city with the most bridges with piers or stands within city limits.

How many, exactly?

446

That would be 3 more than that other, slightly more renowned (but far prettier) city.

I had the distinct pleasure of walking across Hot Metal Bridge the other day, and you don’t have to be a formal Civil Engineering major (such as myself) to appreciate a good truss or two.

I LOVE walking across bridges. Some day I want to pretend I’m a tourist again and walk across the Brooklyn Bridge! I haven’t done it since I was about 6.
