how to: love your room

September 25, 2010

I really love the apartment that I’m in this year.  I love it enough to stay in it and actually get work done in a timely manner.  My room is big enough so that I can accomplish everything that I need: playing dress-up and doing work.  Oh, and sleeping, but I barely get to do that.

Here are a few tips that I have applied to my new space that I think have really streamlined my life.  I can now spend less time finding that other shoe or my student ID, and I now have a better chance of getting to class almost on time.

Recently, all I’ve been reaching for are comfy button-downs, stripes, and pretty, lacy things.  These items only make up a fraction of my wardrobe, but I have them on their own rod so that I can spend less time flipping through things that I’m tired of.

This same idea goes for accessories.  I’ve been going out a lot, so I have my satchels (perfect for drinking and dancing) on their own rack, away from my totes and shoulder bags.  My light scarves will soon be tucked away for my warmer, cold month ones.

Always hang your necklaces and other jewelry so that they don’t get all tangled together.  There is no greater waste of time than trying to untie about 15 tiny gold strands.

I’m not super high-maintenance, but I do wear make-up every day and need to have my eyeliner, foundation, and perfume all in one place so that I can get ready in a rush.

I have a bit of a magazine addiction, so it’s easy for the piles of Vogues and Elles to get out of hand.  I’ve used these fashion tomes as an easier way to arrange my things.  Having multiple levels of stuff makes it all look more interesting and I’m using vertical space instead of wasting precious desk or table space.

This technique also lets me store a few more things.  I have these pretty little heels with gold studs.  While I don’t get to wear them very often, they make for a nice piece of decor.

I love, love, LOVE natural light, and I have found that they best way to maximize sunshine is to stick mirrors all over the place so that the light just bounces around all day.  They make the room seem bigger and brighter, and I always have a place to see if my hair looks too ridiculous upon waking up.

I am always running late because of that one last thing that I can’t seem to find – my bus pass, my keys, sunglasses, whatever.  So now, right next to my door, I have a tray where I toss everything that I need.  When I come home, I just stick everything right there, and when I need it, it’s there again.  I haven’t needed to replace my ID once since I started this system and I’m much happier because of it.

So there you have it – a few good ideas to make your space a little conducive to life.

Do you have a tip or two you’d like to share?
