a hike in Assisi

April 6, 2012

a haze of green and stone.

later in our trip, we visited Assisi, home of St Francis, the patron saint of animals and the environment.  the town was rather small, with just a handful of gelato shops, and the highlight of the area was a short hike up to an ancient fortress.  the aqueducts and other structures just towered out of nature and it was hard to grasp the incredible manpower that it took to make them.

I love Assisi. There is a different feeling of time there. A time that goes to the people to give them something and not to leave something. Wonderful photos

Not only Assisi are such a lovely places…
Strange read than are more indesctructible Roman architecture sites, than the newest one…

You have brought back such wonderful memories, such a special place. We stayed in a villa called Brother Sun, Sister Moon, named after St Francis and St Clare. Where else in the world would you find the resting place of 4 saints – this place is like no other. I must go back!

  20. April 11, 2012 10:07 am

Assisi, just as I remember it. I thought it was one of the most beautiful and serene places on earth. Your photos do it justice. Thank you!

  21. April 11, 2012 10:30 am

Thanks for sharing your photos! I’m a fan of rustic settings and Assisi definitely reminds me of simpler times.

  22. April 11, 2012 10:39 am

Beautiful photos. I wonder if the film “Brother Sun, Sister Moon” was filmed near Assisi–it is a film about Francis of Assisi. I have heard that the roses that grow around Assisi have no thorns.

Makes me homesick for Europe :).

I would want to be there. Assisi is very interesting place.

Absolutely breathtaking! St. Francis was one of the saints my grandmother would pray to regularly. These photos make me miss Italy that much more! Thank you so much for sharing.

Very nice! thanks for sharing your adventure. I particularly like the photo of the medieval street with the flags, and the one with the monastery camouflaged on the hill. What a cool place. Congrats on FP – MoSop

I was in Assisi recently and fell in love with it. Even with St. Francis, although I’m not a Christian or even religious. He was just such a nonconformist, hippie kind of do-gooder! Thanks for posting.

Your last photos is so nice. I like how the aquaduct, with its perfect, plumb walls and elegant arches, made stone upon stone, by hand, frames a modern building project in the distance, a massive crane doing the work of so many people…
