basic space

– the xx

while I was touring the greater Philadelphia area last weekend, I stopped by the old Bethlehem Steel Works and was pleasantly surprised by what the old industrial center has become.  the plant closed in 1995 after over 140 years of steel production, serving as an important industrial and cultural landmark for the area.  today, the space is revitalized as a center for the arts, casino, playground, movie theater, and so much more.  it kind of reminded me of Berlin or Pittsburgh with its use of old, defunct spaces for a cool, new setting that will help the community to prosper and grow.

my dad was reading Tech Review the day we stopped by the Works, and there was actually a really good pictorial essay in the magazine about the plant’s glory days.  check it out here.
